A 2002 untitled abstract expressionist oil painting on Bristol board or paper by Los Angeles-based artist Chase Langford.

Created during the same early period as his “maps” paintings, of which we offer two in separate listings, as well as a number of other works by the artist. That fact and the specific color palette suggest that this is an aerial view of an island in an azure sea about to be overtaken by a black, brain-like bank of approaching rain clouds. Purposefully naive technique belies a skilled eye for balance and proportion, and suggests motifs that the prolific artist would expand on greatly as his career progressed.

Signed and dated “Chase Langford 2002” at lower left via inscription made while paint was still wet. Natural satin finish wood frame with white mat under glass.

Sight is H 13.25 in. x W 10.25 in. Overall dimensions are H 21.13 in. x W 17.13 in. x D 1.5 in..

Chase Langford studied cartography while attending the University of California, Santa Barbara, and took a job as the staff cartographer at UCLA upon graduation. Per the artist: “My work always has a geographic reference. Each painting is informed by a place that I have been expressing, and its geography in some way.” His map paintings were featured in the 2009 book ‘The Map as Art, Contemporary Artists Explore Cartography’, and his widely exhibited work can be found in notable private and public collections around the world.
