A 1980s large and arresting abstract expressionist acrylic portrait painting of a male nude torso by Robert English.

Very well built gentleman sans head and lower legs strikes a confidently casual pose. Nicely rendered figure study-like subject is backlit by a radioactive green glow.

Bright, loose figure contrasts handsomely with dark, hard-edge style background. Features English’s signature muted eggplant and slate color palette, with parallel lines calling to mind the visual vibe of ‘80s cultural icon Max Headroom.

Unsigned and untitled. One of a number of paintings by Robert English that we currently offer in separate listings, all of which were recently acquired from a discerning San Francisco collector of his work. A photo of the artist’s curriculum vitae through the late-1990s that was included with the collection is shown at the end.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. A couple tiny marks at top right, a few tiny nicks on edges, and a small ding on lower left corner. A .75-inch-wide chip on subject’s right elbow (small flaking section has been glued to prevent chipping off), and a line of cracking on left bicep.
