A circa 1750 American Queen Anne period cast brass tobacco or snuff box with lid.

Charming and rare antique box from the New England American colonies features beveled and shaped corners, scalloped aprons, and a peaked lid with finial. Lead-lined interior and underside. Stamped “R.M. [or R.H.] 1000” on underside of lid.

Interior not including lid measures H 2.63 in. x W 2.88 in. x W 2 in.

Includes a delightfully informative note handwritten by a former owner in 1995 that reads:

“This brass tobacco box, New England, c. 1750, came from our country home in Connecticut. It was very near the Yudhris [?]—of Pepperidge Farm, no less. We used it in the kitchen to keep string, but never tobacco—until its value soared. Then it was moved to the overmantel in the sitting room.”

Condition: Good Wear consistent with age and use. In very good untarnished antique condition. Finial has very slight lean. Top edge of box has a few fleabites, with one a bit bigger possibly from casting; not visible with lid on. Faint thumbprint on one side, and two faint fingerprints on the other.
