A 1909 Villeroy & Boch illustrated stoneware beer stein commemorating the 1908 50th anniversary of the Atlantic Garden beer hall on The Bowery in New York City.
Stippled illustrations of founder William Kramer alongside sons Albert J. Kramer and William Kramer Jr., with historical depictions of the original Atlantic Garten—and later, Atlantic Garden—building on either side.
Legend at top reads: “Fiftieth Anniversary / May 8th, 1908 / Atlantic Garden / William Kramer’s Sons. Proprietors.”
Legend at bottom reads: “50, 52, 54 Bowery, New York”.
Underside printed with “L. Straus & Sons / New York / Germany”; Villeroy & Boch maker’s mark including “Mettlach” and “Made in Germany”; and stamped “1909”.
The Atlantic Garden opened on The Bowery in 1858 and served as a cultural hub for early German American, and later Yiddish, immigrants. It was built on the site of The Bull’s Head Tavern, which opened in 1750, famously counted George Washington as a patron, and is considered one of the most important brewpubs in American history.
