An exquisite signed Art Deco cast verdigris bronze sculpture of a male figure with spear on black marble base titled “Le Guetteur au Javelot” by Belgian sculptor Alexandre Ouline.

Originally sculpted circa 1930—the well known Ouline was active in France from 1918 to 1940—it’s possible that this particular example, or perhaps just its base, dates from somewhat later.

Extremely well executed nearly nude form of the lithe yet muscular look-out, with his intense, sun-shielded gaze fixed into the distance, stands poised to pounce into action with the long spear gripped tightly by his side.

Enticingly handsome visage and striking physique and features from fingertips to toes draw one in for a closer look, while setting the imagination alight with visions of the exciting scenario captured mid-action by the master sculptor. Attractively hued and uniform verdigris finish serves to highlight and enhance the overall work.

Signed in the mold, with a reproduction of Ouline’s handwritten signature and the typeset word “Bronze” impressed on the outside of the figure’s left thigh.

Presented on what we believe to be a polished pure Belgium black marble-clad base with solid concrete core.
