An enchanting and uncommon 1950s hand-crafted Murano glass gold-flecked blue birds sculpture by Salviati, with a design attributed to Alfredo Barbini.

Very skillfully executed life-size depiction of a gorgeous matched pair of animated birds—perhaps caught in the midst of a courtship ritual, or maybe already soulmates—with their long wings and tails imparting a lovely look of graceful elegance. They’re perched upon a footed base decorated with a flower framed by leaves.

Heads and bodies are a gorgeous shade of light to medium cornflower blue that appears a bit softer in person. Its beautiful tone shifts subtly in different lighting conditions, and the elusive color is almost impossible to capture exactly—or to do justice to—in photos. (For this listing, it was photographed in natural light.)

Blue portions of birds are incased sommerso-style in a thin layer of clear glass infused with gold dust and flecks. Beaks, wings, stylized legs, six-lobed base, and decorative floret are all clear glass heavily infused with gold leaf, flecks, and dust as well, giving the entire piece a warm, shimmering glow.

Retains original “Murano Glass – Made in Italy” label and “H. Liebes” tag. H. Liebes was a high-end fur, clothing, and accessories boutique in downtown San Francisco on the corner of Grant & Geary. It was founded in 1864, and closed in 1971.
