Carol Setterlund, “Martyr’s Shield”, Abstract Mixed-Media Wood Sculpture, 1980s

$1,950.00

A large 1980s abstract mixed-media wood sculpture titled “Martyr’s Shield” by notable Northern California artist Carol Setterlund. Hand-carved from a single piece of solid redwood with various geometric forms, textures, and intersecting lines giving it a strikingly dynamic presence. Sections and elements feature exactingly applied ebonized, silver, gunmetal, and copper finishes that counterintuitively highlight the organic nature and grain of the wood. Setting the sculpture apart and giving it a borderline Brutalist edge are hundreds of twist nails driven partially and exactingly through the two largest sections. They provide a great morphing surface effect as one’s perspective or the light source moves around the piece. The menacing spiked bed protruding from the roughly textured silver section on the blackened back makes clear the inspiration for the “martyr” part of the sculpture’s title. Displays an uncommon aesthetic and use of materials and finishes by Setterlund, whose carved redwood sculptures of this size and period typically hewed to more organic unadorned forms with natural wood tones. On satin black lacquered solid wood plinth base with inscribed artist signature at lower right. Label with printed title on underside. Sculpture is bolted to the base, and can be rotated somewhat in either direction. Dimensions overall; Height: 32.25 in Width: 35.75 in Depth: 6.88 in Sculpture is H 29 in. x W 35.75 in. x D 4.25 in.
