An absolutely lovely and luminous 1950s Impressionist oil painting on canvas over board of a colorful Western or Southwestern America landscape, signed “Ellis”.
Beautifully executed and evocative en plein air golden hour vista, with a scrub brush and wildflower-dotted valley leading to craggy, shadowed foothills in front of a majestic blaze orange mountain range. Cadmium yellow sky with subtle hints of pale blue gives the picturesque scene a warm and idyllic glow. A half-buried wagon wheel in the distance provides a winking sense of scale
In a rustic yet refined vintage two-tone oak frame, with nail holes (or possibly worming) lending it a handsome touch of western character.
Signed “Ellis” at bottom right in reddish-orange with a shadowed effect. Most likely not by the renowned Fremont Ellis, though the subject matter and style are extremely similar to his highly collectible work from the same mid-century time period.
Back is covered in woodgrain contact paper—more information about the artist or work might lie beneath, but we’re leaving it to the buyer to make that discovery.
