Jules Moigniez “Racehorse”, Patinated Bronze Sculpture on Marble Plinth, c. 1880 ***SOLD***

A circa 1880 patinated bronze sculpture titled “Race Horse” by Jules Moigniez on black marble plinth. Finely sculpted filly—or perhaps young mare—racehorse with lithe champion-like form and bearing stands on a rectangular base signed “J. Moigniez” in mold at bottom right. Solid bronze lost wax casting displays exceptionally crisp detail throughout, indicating this to be an early iteration. Features a uniformly deep and rich patinated finish that perfectly suits the subject and gives added dimensionality to the work. Mounted on custom Belgian black marble rectangular plinth with cove edge and fully felted bottom. Brushed brass plaque engraved “Race Horse by Moigniez” affixed to side appears relatively recent. Weighs a substantial seventeen pounds. Jules Moigniez (b. 1835–1894) was a 19th century French animalier sculptor and frequent Paris Salon exhibitor best known for bronzes depicting birds that are considered some of the finest created during his time. Moigniez’s skill and versatility enabled him to also produce equally fine bronze sculptures of racehorses, which—unlike the beautifully unadorned specimen presented here—were typically fitted with the tack called for by the “Sport of Kings”. Dimensions Height: 13.75 in. Width: 14 in. Depth: 5.5 in. Condition good Wear consistent with age and use. In great antique condition. A couple minuscule and inconsequential signs of wear to statue. Plynth in great condition, w/ only a couple tiny marks and a few very small, faint spots. Copper-colored flecks on statue in some pics are light reflections.
