Large Japanese Black Crane and Camellia-Motif Relief Carved Wall Mirror, 1970s

$1,795.00

An exquisite late 1970s Asian black cerused wood wall mirror with relief carved Japanese crane and camellia flower motif. Black lacquered cerused wood frame around a hand-carved and painted satin black panel relief featuring a variety of nearly flawlessly-executed vignettes and patterns. At top, a lively tableau of cranes both in flight and resting between leafy willow trees. At bottom, a grouping of pretty pink camellia flowers. Along each side, exactingly-done sections of Art Deco-like seigaiha wave patterns bracketed by karakusa vine flourishes, which symbolize longevity and prosperity. Flora & fauna colored in handsomely subdued hues. Muted gold-accented patterns with burnished touches speak to the hand-applied nature. Crisply carved relief rewards those who look past their own reflection and lean in closer for an oblique view. On verso is a label (affixed later on tape) printed with “No. 342968” and hand-written with “Solara Design Ltd.” Dimensions of frame: Height: 53 in Width: 28.63 in Depth: 0.75 in Mirror is H 34.38 in. x W 13.38 in. Condition: GoodWear consistent with age and use. In very good vintage condition. A small ding to back of top right corner. A few faint, small, and isolated instances of spotting/streaking on panel, likely from cleaning, and presumably correctible.
