Louis Vuitton Saks & Company Braken 50-Style Suitcase or Cabin Trunk, 1940s

A 1940s Louis Vuitton Braken 50-style mid-size suitcase, weekender, or cabin trunk with uncommon dimensions that was originally purchased from Saks & Company on 5th Avenue in New York.

While its proportions are in keeping with the Braken line, its longest side is 48.9 cm—a tiny bit short for us to definitively state that it’s a Braken 50. The nearly square and slightly deeper dimensions of this model differentiate it from the similar Alzer line, and make it an especially desirable Louis Vuitton luggage option for those in search of a sturdy travel valise perfectly suited for short getaways.

Exterior clad in signature chocolate brown canvas with Louis Vuitton’s iconic monogram pattern. Cognac leather trim printed with two rows of the repeating “LV” monogram. Brass corner guards, hardware, and “Louis Vuitton”-impressed studs. Left and right latches impressed with “LV”.

Center lockable latch (key no longer extant) and escutcheon impressed with the following: patent marks; “Louis Vuitton”; “Made in France”; “149 Bond Street / London”; “70 Champs Elysées / Paris”; and serial number “075078”.

A previous owner’s “E.H.W” monogram is crisply printed in bright yellow just below the escutcheon and handle. Please note that the handle has been professionally repaired, the details of which can be found elsewhere in this listing.

Interior lined in off-white finely woven linen, and features a H 8.25 in. x W 12 in. expandable pouch with dual-snap closure affixed via brass tacks to the lid. It provides a perfect place for one to securely stow important travel documents, papers, and the like. Rails along either side would’ve originally supported a shallow tray or divider.

On the right is an orange Louis Vuitton label with gold “LV” logos and location text, and the serial number “787068” ink-stamped in the middle. On the left is an orange label with gold text that reads “Bought from Saks & Company / Fifth Avenue / New York”.

Repaired: Handle was securely reattached by a professional leatherworker with extensive experience refurbishing LV bags and luggage. A successful effort was made to retain as much of the original material as possible while adhering to the original design. Wear consistent with age and use. In very good condition, with one repair detailed elsewhere. Professionally cleaned & conditioned throughout while retaining authentic character. Some mostly small, light marks to canvas/trim. Wear/patina to brass. Some spotting inside back/by hinges.
