M. Staar “Saint-Tropez Vu de la Citadelle”, Impressionist Oil Painting, 1970s ***SOLD***

A lovely 1970s untitled impressionist oil painting on canvas of Saint-Tropez, France, as seen from the town’s historic Citadel, a hilltop fortress built in 1602 that affords one panoramic views of the bay. Signed “M. Staar” or “M. Staor” at lower left. Verdant vantage point captures the beautiful seaside enclave below, with its terracotta roofs and distinctive bell tower to the right, and its port with the tips of sailboat masts peeking up to the left. The coastline on the opposite side of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez provides a peaceful vista that fades into the distance. Notable for an understated yet evocative depiction of the golden hour in pastel yellow, blue, and periwinkle. Subtly varied levels of sheen and detail combine to convey the gauzy glow that makes early morning or evening coastal air so special. In custom museum quality frame with complementary semi-gloss metallic colors. Signed at lower left. Possibly attributable to Patricia McNeill Staar, an adult student at Long Beach Academy of Art per the Independent Press Telegram, August 6, 1950, as referenced in Nancy Dustin Moure’s “Publications in California Art No. 11, Index to California Art at the Laguna Beach Art Association, 1918-1975”.
