Modeline Tripod Floor Lamp with Fiberglass Saucer Shades, Brass, and Wood, 1950s
$1,200.00
An exceptional and uncommon 1950s Modeline mid-century modern atomic-style tripod floor lamp with large fiberglass saucer shade and matching smaller one on a brass rod and black wood base.
Extra-large and impressive two-foot diameter cream-colored fiberglass saucer shade over dual light sockets with a one-foot diameter fiberglass saucer shade or reflector below. A trio of slightly splayed slender brass rod stems are each anchored in a gracefully arched element of the satin black lacquered tripod base, which measures sixteen inches tip-to-tip. Base appears to have been professionally refinished at some point more recently, as it looks great with minimal signs of age or wear.
Chain switch with bullet-shaped satin black lacquered wood pull that matches base hangs at center. Brass sockets and fittings with dark natural patina mount to a satin black lacquered housing with patinated brass cap and black support rod capped by a brass finial with donut spacer. Semi-opaque fiberglass shades combine to present a wonderfully warm and inviting effect when lit.
Yellow Underwriters Laboratory label on a socket reads “Modeline Co. of California”. We’ve been unable to find any other examples of this exact design, suggesting that it’s an especially uncommon or scarce model by the quintessential and highly collectable mid-century modern American lighting company.
