Robert English, Towering Abstract Memphis-Style Four-Sided Painting, 1980s

A 1980s tower-like abstract Memphis-style four-sided mixed-media acrylic painting by Robert English. Shown standing on the floor for photography reasons, but intended to be hung from the ceiling via a pre-drilled mounting hole in the top.

Sculptural six-foot-tall, five-inch-square, custom made canvas with Minimalist geometric shapes and abstract flowing forms in subdued shades of eggplant, black, and grey that wraparound all four sides.

Affixed to one corner is a .75-inch-wide painted wood strip with a Classic Memphis color palette and sponged effect. Aside from providing an unexpected bit of visual interest, it also serves to facilitate the work’s 360 degree rotation as it hangs freely, either by catching a breeze like a fin or by being used as a handle.

Closer examination reveals the artist’s hand to be on engaging display throughout, with line and brush work having very slight imprecisions that humanize what could’ve otherwise been a cold and calculated work. Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. In great vintage condition. Some tiny, inconsequential marks and a .25″ shallow dimple to canvas. Some small nail head bumps can be seen in surface of canvas from fabrication of custom stretcher. Top and bottom painted black and with light wear.
