Set of Four Chinese Southern Official’s Hat Elm & Rattan Armchairs, c. 1900 ***SOLD***

A fine set of four circa 1900 Qing dynasty Southern official’s hat armchairs in elm. Very handsome and well crafted solid elm wood frame distinguished by open carved back splat medallion, elegantly sculpted skirting, and bamboo-motif turned wood spindles. Flat seat of tightly woven rattan with wood panel support. Exhibits warm light caramel tone and great natural character. Artisan’s hand on attractive display throughout, including via exposed joinery. Four Chinese characters printed on back of each back splat. Label with handwritten Chinese notations affixed to underside of each seat. Dimensions Height: 41 in. Width: 22.25 in. Depth: 18.38 in. Seat Height: 21.25 in. Condition good. Wear consistent with age and use. In great antique condition. Most marks appear to be natural or from fabrication. A bit of very light wear/tiny nicks at very bottom of legs where they meet the floor. Also on legs at the floor is some discreet spots of wood filler from fabrication.
