A charming little mid-century rattan and faux-mahogany cigarette, cocktail, or side table by Tropical Sun Co. of Pasadena, California.
Minimalist bent rattan design features a ring-shaped base, bowed supports, and a stem portion that resembles an umbrella handle or cane, giving the petite piece great presence while allowing for one-handed relocation. Cantilevered 11-inch diameter, 18-inch high table has a faux-ribbon mahogany laminate top with painted edge, making it perfectly prepared for a portable potent potable. Accented by rattan wicker bindings at the frame’s four points of contact. Art Deco lines and refined island vibe would look fantastic in a SoCal, Palm Beach, bohemian, or tiki interior, as well as out on the lanai.
Acquired from the original owner’s estate as part of a superb Paul Frankl-style rattan living room suite that includes various equally well-executed seating, tables, and lighting. All pieces were originally purchased at the same time from Tropical Sun Co., founded in 1934 in Pasadena, California, and taken over in 1973 by renowned rattan impresario Harvey Schwartz.
